Can existing sensors be integrated into a new monitoring system?
In most cases, yes. Rather than replacing working sensors, a signal conditioning and telemetry layer can often normalise outputs from multiple existing sensors into one consistent, centrally viewable data stream.
What is a data logger and do I need one alongside my sensors?
A data logger records sensor readings over time, either locally or transmitted remotely, so trends can be reviewed rather than only reading an instantaneous value. Most operations monitoring more than a handful of points, or wanting historical trend data for maintenance or compliance, benefit from logging rather than live-reading alone.
Do I need hazardous area certified sensors for a mine site?
Only for areas classified as hazardous zones due to flammable gas, vapour, or combustible dust, such as some fuel, gas, or coal-handling areas. Not every point on a mine site requires it, which is why zone classification should be confirmed before sensors are selected.
What does IP67 mean on a sensor datasheet?
IP67 means the enclosure is completely dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. It’s a common minimum for outdoor industrial sensors exposed to weather or washdown.
How often should industrial sensors be calibrated?
It depends on the sensor type, application criticality and manufacturer guidance, but most industrial sensors used in safety or compliance-relevant measurements are recalibrated on a 6 to 12 month cycle. High-drift environments or safety-critical points may need more frequent checks.
What is signal conditioning in data acquisition?
Signal conditioning is the process of converting a raw sensor output into a signal that downstream equipment can use, including amplification, filtering, linearisation, and conversion between analog and digital formats.
What is the difference between a sensor and a transducer?
A sensor detects a physical property such as pressure, temperature or vibration. A transducer converts that detected signal into a usable electrical output. In practice the terms are often used interchangeably in industrial contexts, but strictly speaking a transducer includes the conversion step.

How far can XTMS transmit sensor data wirelessly?
XTMS uses a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol and can transmit sensor data up to 800 metres line-of-sight between sensors and the base station tablet. Range can be extended further with the addition of a wireless repeater.
How many sensors can be connected to XTMS at once?
XTMS supports up to 100 sensors of any type simultaneously on the same system. Multiple XTMS systems can operate in the same area without conflict.
What types of sensors are compatible with XTMS?
XTMS supports hydraulic and air pressure sensors, ball tip and roller tip linear position sensors, rod end linear position sensors, non-contact and contact temperature sensors, and standard and high-temperature laser RPM (Tacho) sensors. Custom sensors can also be integrated.
Can XTMS be customised for my specific application?
Yes. XTRAN’s engineering team can develop custom sensors, custom visualisations, custom reports, and direct data integrations with operational management systems for virtually any industrial measurement application.
Is XTMS suitable for underground mining environments?
Yes. The XTMS 2.4GHz wireless protocol has been proven to operate effectively in underground tunnels and around metal-dense environments such as mine maintenance sheds.
What is XTMS and what does it stand for?
XTMS stands for XTRAN Telemetry Measurement System. It is a wireless, multi-sensor data acquisition platform developed by XTRAN (a division of Applied Measurement Australia) for industrial measurement, particularly in mining, construction, agriculture, and heavy industry.
